Marques de Grinon Petit Verdot (Dominio de Valdepusa) 2011 - 2012 75cl

100% Petit Verdot.

Marques de Grinon Petit Verdot is een wijn uit Valdepusa

Marques de Grinon Petit Verdot heeft 12 maanden gerijpt op Frans eiken.
Zeer bijzondere cepage wijn (100% Petit Verdot).

The Wine Advocate:

The 2011 Petit Verdot had an even longer maceration and was aged in new French oak barrels for 12-15 months, finally bottled in May 2014. Very dark-colored, the wine has a peppery nose with plenty of oak-related aromas, spices, smoke, vanilla, cinnamon, toast and a core of very ripe (but not overripe) black fruit and some creamy tones. The palate is medium to full-bodied with abundant, fine-grained tannins and some austerity and minerality with a supple finish. An austere, well-oaked, powerful wine that should develop in bottle. I'd give it some more bottle age and enjoy over the next 5-8 years with powerful meat dishes.14,400 bottles. Luis Gutierrez Feb. 2015

I was able to slot in a last minute visit to Dominio de Valdepusa in Montes de Toledo on my way back to Madrid, an essential visit given the history of this estate. The castle of Malpica has belonged to the Carlos Falco family since 1292, and it was granted the very first “Pago” denomination in 2002. It is an enormous estate – from the entrance to the winery takes around ten minutes to drive past the beautiful Moorish landscape and olive groves. There are presently 52 hectares under vine, mainly international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (both introduced in 1974), Syrah and Petit Verdot. Their wines have been overseen by such luminaries as Dr. Richard Smart, Emile Peynaud and Michel Rolland. It was a pleasure to meet proprietor Carlos Falco Fernandez de Cordoba and his daughter Xandra, along with their oenologist, Julio Mourelle. Carlos, who graduated from UC Davis, was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Vinos de Pago denomination and was instrumental in promoting international varieties in the region. It was also interesting to speak at length with Mourelle. “I am feeling less afraid of making mistakes,” he explained. “We don’t like the wines to be over-oaked at all – only one-quarter to one-third are new barrels. We are learning more and more about irrigation and achieving fine pH levels just by working empirically with hydrometers.” Overall, this was a very impressive set of wines, quite modern in style but beautifully crafted."

Neal Martin, Apr 2013.

This wine proceeds from the first Petit Verdot vineyards in Spain and when originally released in 1994 it became the world’s first commercial bottling of a 100% Petit Verdot in over 100 years. It is considered by many wine lovers and critics to be amongst the very best Petit Verdot wines in the world.
TASTING NOTES
Deep red colour. Complex, floral and noble wood aromas with sensations of ripe fruit, liquorice and freshly ground pepper. In the palate it shows rich, structured flavours of cassis, espresso, liquorice and minerals. Core of fruit is ripe, vibrant and pure. Exhibits smoky, spicy black cherry and black currant flavours. Good structure balanced tannins, excellent depth and beautifully concentrated and textured long finish.
