Het landgoed omvat 25 hectare, waarop voor het grootste deel Tempranillo en voor een klein deel Merlot, Garnacha en Petit Verdot worden verbouwd. De druiven van Vizcarra Inés zijn afkomstig van 80 jaar oude wijnstokken. The Wine advocate: The 2006 Ines Vizcarra spent 15 months in 500 liter French oak. It offers up a superb aromatic array of pain grille, pencil lead, espresso, incense, black cherry, and blackberry. Packed and stacked, this dense, masculine effort (perhaps the owner should have sired sons) demands 8-10 years of additional bottle age. There is tons of extract and a boatload of tannin but it has the balance to age gracefully in the manner of a top-flight Bordeaux. Its prime drinking window will extend from 2016 to 2030+. Pruimen, zwarte bessen, kesrsen, mineralen, prachtige tannines en een grootse finale. Nu reeds op dronk, maar kan zich tenminste de komende 15 jaar nog verder ontwikkelen. The Wine Advocate: The 2007 Alabaster came from pre-phylloxera vines yielding a miniscule half ton of fruit per acre. It went through ML in new French oak before being transferred to a different set of new French oak barrels for 18 months of aging. Glycerin oozes down the glass of this remarkably rich effort. Purple/black colored, it offers up a brooding nose of licorice, fresh tar, black cherry, and blackberry. On the palate it is full-bodied, dense, and chewy, but in balance. This behemoth demands 8-10 years of cellaring but should ultimately reward patient cellaring in a big way. Bodegas Teso La Monja is the Eguren family’s new project in Toro featuring a state of the art winery and old vines of Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo). It was also aged for 20 months in new French and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple/black color, it offers up a brooding bouquet of tar, licorice, pencil lead, Asian spices, black cherry, and black raspberry. Dense, layered, incipiently complex, and powerful, it is more structured than the Alto Moncayo and will benefit from 5-7 years of additional cellaring. It will offer a drinking window extending from 2015-2037. The Wine Advocate: The 2009 Psi is much more precocious on the nose compared to the 2008, a real step up in quality. It offers fresh strawberry, raspberry and a touch of cranberry, all infused with exotic notes of mango and orange essence. It blossoms beautifully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins on the entry. There are subtle notes of blackberry, tobacco, tart cherry and pain grille that combine harmoniously on the understated, natural finish. The Wine Advocate: The 2011 Vega Sicilia Unico Especial Release is rich, spicy, and complex. It has impeccable balance and another 20 years of life. It simply does not get any better. When you consider that the Reserva Especial sells for less than half the price of a Bordeaux First Growth (and you don’t have to wait for 20 years for it to be approachable) it is one of the great bargains in world-class wine. Bodegas Vega Sicilia remains a benchmark for the world’s great red wines. The Valbuena bottling receives 3 years in barrel and 2 years in bottle prior to release. On the occasion of my visit in May 2010, the three Reserva Especials already in bottle and awaiting release were tasted side by side. They are identified (for the purposes of this review only) as the 2013 Release, the 2012 Release, and the 2011 Release. I was not told what vintages are in each bottling but it actually makes little difference. The Reserva Especials are blended to a house style designed to reflect Vega Sicilia at its very best. The vagaries of vintage (as reflected in Unico) are blended away leaving a wine that is, in my opinion, better than any of the single vintage wines with the possible exception of the 1942. The Wine Advocate: The 2011 Vizcarra Roble, 100% Tempranillo from organic vineyards, was aged seven months in both French and American oak. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a sumptuous nose of blackberries, new saddle leather, licorice, camphor and crushed rocks. With a superb texture and full-bodied mouthfeel, and built like a skyscraper, this multidimensional Ribera del Duero is already drinking fabulously well. The Wine Advocate: The 2009 La Montesa is a blend of 65% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo picked by hand from the namesake vineyard and aged 20% in new oak. It has a well-defined strawberry, Morello and shortcake-scented bouquet infused with fennel and licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, expressive red berry fruit tinged with burnt toast and white pepper, and an elegant, caressing finish that speaks of its place. This is a very commendable Rioja. Drink now-2018. Based in Alfaro in Rioja Baja, Bodegas Palacios Remondo is where Alvaro Palacios wields his talent when not in Priorat (or elsewhere). Given his exacting standards there, it is unsurprising that he has sought to decrease production in order to improve quality. It is also unsurprising that these form an excellent set of Rioja wines, sculpted in a more modern style, although to be truly honest, I found his cheaper wines just as good, if not better than the flagship Propiedad! The beautiful fragrance is accompanied by a wine with a full-bodied, opulent texture, and a voluptuous, luxurious mouthfeel as well as finish. Drink this beauty over the next 7-10 years. Patrick Mata told me that the village from which it emerges has only 95 residents, all of whom are grape farmers! This may be the “bargain of the year” in my tastings. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as copious notes of black cherry jam, licorice, blackberries and subtle hints of earth, pepper and meat. More deeply colored as well as structured, it will reward another 5-6 years of cellaring. It has a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2022. I was also presented with a vertical tasting of Gran Claustro dating back to 1993. On the palate the oak is integrated but this massive effort will require a minimum of 8-10 years to become civilized. Nu al op dronk, maar kan zich de komende 5 jaar nog verder ontwikkelen. Zeer goede en lange afdronk. Prieto Picudo is sourced from 100-year-old vines and aged for 17 months in French oak. Aromas of sandalwood, spice box, boysenberry, mulberry, and earthy minerals inform the nose of this vibrant, nearly shimmering red. It has the fruit and structure for balance and should evolve for another 4-5 years. It is the prototype for Prieto Picudo that will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2025+. Een fantastische wijn uit een zeer goed jaar van de geniale Spaanse wijnmaker Raul Perez: rijp rood en zwart fruit: zwarte bessen, frambozen, cranberries, mineralen, Mediterrane kruiden, soepele tannines en een mooie, lange afdronk. Komt het beste tot zijn recht als hij tevoren wordt gedecanteerd. The Wine Advocate; The 2011 El Pecado is very deep in color compared to its peers. It has an intense nose of black cherries, sloes and stuffed dates with fine definition, although despite decanting this wine later at home, it remains compact and broody. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, caressing entry. There are plenty of fine tannins lending this symmetry and focus with a tightly wound, crisp finish that shows just a touch of heat on the aftertaste. It will need two or three years to reach its full potential. Drink 2015-2025. The Wine Advocate: The 2011 Vizcarra Roble, 100% Tempranillo from organic vineyards, was aged seven months in both French and American oak. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a sumptuous nose of blackberries, new saddle leather, licorice, camphor and crushed rocks. With a superb texture and full-bodied mouthfeel, and built like a skyscraper, this multidimensional Ribera del Duero is already drinking fabulously well. The Wine Advocate: The opaque purple-colored 2010 Tarima Hill exhibits notes of chocolate fudge, pen ink, graphite, blueberries and blackberries. This full-bodied, 100% Monastrell should drink well for a decade or more. These amazing efforts taste more like they should cost $30 to $50 as opposed to the mid-teens. Bodega Volver, a joint project between Rafael Canizares and Jorge Ordonez, produces wines from three appellations, La Mancha, Alicante and Jumilla. Readers will need to take note of the nearly identical cuvees, some of which are made from organic grapes and others from non-organic grapes. That information is clearly marked on the labels. The Wine Advocate (Sketch 2009): The exception is the 2009 Sketch, an Albarino sourced from a parcel harvested 1-2 weeks later than all the other vineyards. It was fermented and aged (without malolactic) in two 700-liter barrels for 12 months followed by 60 days of aging in the bottle at 30 meters under the sea. It offers up an enthralling bouquet of mineral, saline, floral, tropical, and marzipan elements. Intense, complex, impeccably balanced, and remarkably lengthy, this is as good as Albarino gets. The Wine Advocate: The 2011 Sketch is just wonderful – pure Albarino from vines planted in 1972 on sand and granite soils, it sees 12 months in French oak. Interestingly, Raul opted to age some lots underwater in order to see how the lack of oxygen impacts upon the elevage (although some of the lots were spoiled and of course, did not enter the final blend!) The nose is reticent at first, but over one hour it unfolds to offer subtle notes of lime and a tinge of sea-foam, the oak barely noticeable. The palate is exquisite: beautifully balanced and with real race and tension. There is an adorable twist of bitter lemon that keeps this Sketch on its toes. Taut, pure and effortlessly speaking of its place, this is just a delightful Rias Baixas that you will savor to the last drop. Drink now-2017+.
