The 2007 Crianza spent 12 months in French and American oak. Medium purple in color, it sports an inviting nose of Asian spices, incense, lavender, cedar, black cherry, and blackberry. On the palate it is medium-bodied, exhibits good grip and volume, layered spicy fruit, and 1-2 years of aging potential. It is an excellent value that will be at its best from 2012 to 2019.

In the meantime, 2008 was a somewhat challenging vintage and, as a result, 60% of the juice meant for the old-vine cuvee went into the 2008 Las Rocas Garnacha. Purple colored, it delivers a smoky, spicy, black cherry perfume leading to a soft, easy-going, savory wine meant for drinking over the next 4 years. As usual, it is an excellent value.
The Las Rocas brand was purchased by E. & J. Gallo from Eric Solomon, its creator and importer, in 2009. For the moment Solomon remains in charge of the selection but in the future production is certain to rise significantly. Hopefully the quality of the wine will remain unchanged.

The 2011 Vizcarra Roble, 100% Tempranillo from organic vineyards, was aged seven months in both French and American oak. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a sumptuous nose of blackberries, new saddle leather, licorice, camphor and crushed rocks. With a superb texture and full-bodied mouthfeel, and built like a skyscraper, this multidimensional Ribera del Duero is already drinking fabulously well. It should continue to do so for up to a decade.

The Wine Advocate:
The 2009 La Montesa is a blend of 65% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo picked by hand from the namesake vineyard and aged 20% in new oak. It has a well-defined strawberry, Morello and shortcake-scented bouquet infused with fennel and licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, expressive red berry fruit tinged with burnt toast and white pepper, and an elegant, caressing finish that speaks of its place. This is a very commendable Rioja. Drink now-2018.
Based in Alfaro in Rioja Baja, Bodegas Palacios Remondo is where Alvaro Palacios wields his talent when not in Priorat (or elsewhere). Given his exacting standards there, it is unsurprising that he has sought to decrease production in order to improve quality. It is also unsurprising that these form an excellent set of Rioja wines, sculpted in a more modern style, although to be truly honest, I found his cheaper wines just as good, if not better than the flagship Propiedad!

If I was asked to hold up a bottle of what modern Ribera del Duero should taste like and what is should aspire to, the 2008 Alion would be the one in my hand. It has more intensity and volume on the nose when compared directly with the 2007. Tasted in February 2012, and then in January 2013, it remains a fabulous expression of Ribera del Duero. It boasts of heavenly bouquet of black plum, crushed violets and tobacco that soar from the glass, while displaying a level of delineation that would serve a lesson to many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, silky-smooth tannins that belie the structure underneath. The acidity lends the 2008 a little more edginess than the 2007, while the finish has a wonderful sense of symmetry and focus. World class. Drink 2016-2025+.
Alion should need no introduction. Owned by the Alvarez family of Vega Sicilia, the 85 hectare estate included 35 hectares around the winery and 50 hectares with Vega Sicilia itself. Debuting in 1991, the wine is sourced from 20-year-old Tinto Fino that undergoes a modern style of winemaking, using state-of-the-art technology and maturation in Nevers French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months. Pablo Alvarez describes Alion as “a wine somewhere between Ribera del Duero and a Medoc in style.”

Nadat Vega de Toro, de producent van Numanthia en Termanthia was overgenomen door Moët & Chandon, kochten de voormalige eigenaren oude wijnpercelen en werd gestart met de productie van Almirez, Victorino en Alabaster.
Almirez is afkomstig van 15 tot 35 jaar oude wijnstokken. De druiven worden geoogst in de 2e week van oktober.

Even richer is the 2010 Almirez, which comes from a vineyard planted at an altitude of 2,300 feet. Yields were 18 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine was aged 12 months in mostly French oak (30% new). This fabulous, inky/purple-colored wine exhibits notes of violets, graphite, licorice, blackberries and cassis. Full-bodied and rich with silky tannins as well as abundant minerality, this super-rich, full-throttle 2010 can be enjoyed over the next decade.
These are two extraordinary wines produced by the Eguren family in the province of Zamora in Toro. Readers who love full-flavored, robust, exuberant red wines will adore these two 2010s.

De Vizcarra 2010 onderging 15 maanden rijping op Frans en Amerikaans eiken.
Het is een dieprode, vitale, soepele wijn. Rijp, zwart fruit, een vleugje kruiden, volle, rijpe tannines en een lange, intense afdronk.
Nu al goed op dronk, maar kan zich tenminste tot 2018 verder ontwikkelen.
Goede combinatie met rood vlees, pastagerechten, paella, pate, kazen en jamon.

Vizcarra Ramos werd opgericht door Juan Carlos Vizcarra in 1991. Het landgoed omvat 25 hectare, waarop voor het grootste deel Tempranillo en voor een klein deel Merlot, Garnacha en Petit Verdot worden verbouwd. Het grootste deel is 30 jaar oud, met een kleine hoeveelheid 80 jaar oude wijnstokken.

The Wine Advocate:
The 2010 JC Vizcarra, also 100% Tempranillo, was aged 15 months in French and American oak. A truly great wine, it boasts a dense purple color along with notes of camphor, creme de cassis, licorice, damp earth and forest floor. The beautiful fragrance is accompanied by a wine with a full-bodied, opulent texture, and a voluptuous, luxurious mouthfeel as well as finish. Drink this beauty over the next 7-10 years.

The 2011 Almirez was tasted as a final blend, although bottling was planned for the month following my visit. It comes from vineyards in Valdefinjas and Toro from vines between 15 and 65 years in age. The “crazy” thermal jumps meant there was much more freshness in this particular wine than any other vintage. It was matured in 30% in new French oak and 70% one year old. It has a deep, introspective bouquet of fresh blackberry and raspberry leaf that opens beautifully with aeration. The oak is finely synched with the fruit here. The palate is succulent and fleshy on the entry, with crisp acidity and persuasive poise and minerality on the finely tuned finish. It is almost the antithesis of cliched Toro being “heavy” or “alcoholic.” Superb! Drink 2015-2023.
Just as many music artists must ponder exactly how they follow up a global smash, so brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren must have sat down and wondered how they could repeat the success of Numanthia-Termes, after they sold the estate to LVMH. They founded Teso La Monja in 2007. They farm 90 hectares of what they describe as “middle and old vineyards” plus another 72 hectares of “young” vineyard. I asked Miguel to explain his approach towards viticulture. “It is growing the healthiest, purest grapes as possible,” he replied. “The philosophy is to transmit the character and the essence of the land into every bottle of wine. Everything is done with the minimum intervention, the vinification more Burgundian in style than Bordelais, to look for gentle extraction, obtain and look after the tannins in the pips. Therefore, we are seeking a lower degree of natural alcohol. We are looking for the freshness and elegance. We have sought north-facing, high-altitude vineyards with a longer vegetative cycle and we are looking for minerality. Our passion is the vineyard. Our wines are different – we are looking for acidity around 5 or 5.7 because we have a slight limestone concentration. We have also purchased a lot of stony vineyards to minimize the thermal jump at the end of the growing season. We are looking for sugar, aromatic and phenolic ripeness that are closer together. Most of the vineyards are planted on a slope to enhance drainage and the Atlantic winds means that ripeness comes 7 to 10 days later. Less licorice notes, more red rather than dark fruits with higher acidity level and lower alcohol and perhaps less tannic structure, less green tannins because the long vegetative cycle allows us to reach a phenolic ripeness.” There are five lines from the entry level: Romanico, Almirez, Victorino, Alabaster and Teso La Monja. All represent top-class wine as one would expect, though for this writer, the Almirez offers pretty much unbeatable value for money.

Prieto Picudo is sourced from 100-year-old vines and aged for 17 months in French oak. Aromas of sandalwood, spice box, boysenberry, mulberry, and earthy minerals inform the nose of this vibrant, nearly shimmering red. It has the fruit and structure for balance and should evolve for another 4-5 years. It is the prototype for Prieto Picudo that will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2025+.

Een fantastische wijn uit een zeer goed jaar van de geniale Spaanse wijnmaker Raul Perez: rijp rood en zwart fruit: zwarte bessen, frambozen, cranberries, mineralen, Mediterrane kruiden, soepele tannines en een mooie, lange afdronk.
Komt het beste tot zijn recht als hij tevoren wordt gedecanteerd.

The Wine Advocate;
The 2011 El Pecado is very deep in color compared to its peers. It has an intense nose of black cherries, sloes and stuffed dates with fine definition, although despite decanting this wine later at home, it remains compact and broody. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, caressing entry. There are plenty of fine tannins lending this symmetry and focus with a tightly wound, crisp finish that shows just a touch of heat on the aftertaste. It will need two or three years to reach its full potential. Drink 2015-2025.
The wines of Raul Perez have been rightly feted by many commentators and it was just “one of those things” that we were not able to meet up when I visited the region. But I was able to receive the samples, since a report upon Ribeira Sacra without his wines was unthinkable.

As much as I admire El Pecado, for this writer it is the 2010 El Penitencia that constitutes Raul’s best wine. A blend of 85% Mencia, 10% Ciano and 5% of the gloriously named Bastardo, it comes from vines over one century old at an altitude of 380 meters and sees 12 months in French oak. It offers a sublime bouquet of dark cherries, raspberry leaf and Alpine streams that is beautifully defined – reminiscent of a Cote de Beaune. The palate is beautifully balanced with finer tannins than the El Percado. It is very pure and alluring with crisp, taut red cherry, blueberry and a twist of sour lemon on the vibrant finish. This is superb. Drink 2014-2020.

The Wine Advocate:
The opaque purple-colored 2010 Tarima Hill exhibits notes of chocolate fudge, pen ink, graphite, blueberries and blackberries. This full-bodied, 100% Monastrell should drink well for a decade or more. These amazing efforts taste more like they should cost $30 to $50 as opposed to the mid-teens.
Bodega Volver, a joint project between Rafael Canizares and Jorge Ordonez, produces wines from three appellations, La Mancha, Alicante and Jumilla. Readers will need to take note of the nearly identical cuvees, some of which are made from organic grapes and others from non-organic grapes. That information is clearly marked on the labels. Slightly more expensive are the 2010 and 2009 Tarima Hill. These cuvees come from the winery’s oldest vines (20 acres of ungrafted vines that were planted in 1935) planted on the highest elevations.

The fabulous 2009 Valderiz comes from 30- to70-year-old vines and is blended with 5% Albillo before aged for 20 months in mainly French oak (50% new). Again, one is impressed by both the precision and clarity on the nose, the vibrant effervescent red berry fruit being allowed to express itself. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, fleshy tannins. There is fine grip here and lovely touches of orange zest and a little balsamic on the elegant finish. This is a top-notch wine that should age with style. Drink 2013-2020.

Vizcarra produceert sinds 1991 wijnen en is één van de beste producenten in Ribera del Duero.
Excellente prijs-kwaliteitverhouding. 7 maanden rijping op Frans en Amerikaans eiken. Volle, elegante, donkerrode wijn. Rood fruit: bosbessen, aardbeien. Mooie evenwichtige tannines en een lange, intensieve afdronk.
Uitstekende combinatie met rood vlees, gevogelte, pastagerechten en om zomaar te drinken.
Serveren op 16°C.

The 2011 Vizcarra Roble, 100% Tempranillo from organic vineyards, was aged seven months in both French and American oak. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a sumptuous nose of blackberries, new saddle leather, licorice, camphor and crushed rocks. With a superb texture and full-bodied mouthfeel, and built like a skyscraper, this multidimensional Ribera del Duero is already drinking fabulously well. It should continue to do so for up to a decade.
These are sensational values from the highly renowned appellation of Ribera del Duero.

The 2008 Contador, rapidly becoming one of Rioja’s benchmark wines, is composed of 86% Tempranillo and 14% Garnacha aged for 18 months in new French oak. It is a glass-coating opaque purple color with an exceptional bouquet of sandalwood exotic spices, lavender, incense, espresso, tapenade, and blackberry. Dense and mouth-coating, it deftly combines elegance and power in a structured wine that will easily achieve its 20th birthday and well beyond.
Benjamin Romeo’s winemaking credentials include over 15 years as head winemaker at Bodegas Artadi, one of Rioja’s greatest producers, and two 100 point scores for his 2004 and 2005 Contador.

Zeer beperkt verkrijgbare wijn.
Afkomstig van 40 jaar oude wijnstokken in een "single vineyard".
Van Sketch worden slechts 1800 flessen geproduceerd.

Deze zeer zeldzame wijn is "unlike anything you have tasted before." De wijn fermenteert in speciale ei-vormige vaten die volgens Raúl Pérez de lees in staat stelt om vrij in de vaten te kunnen circuleren op de zwaartekracht, hoewel hij toch ook battonage (roeren) toepast gedurende de 12 maanden verblijf in het vat.
Al goed op dronk, maar kan zich tot 2017 nog verder ontwikkelen. Het resultaat is een Albariño, zoals u die nog nooit heeft geproefd: vol, fruitig, mineralen en tonen die in de verte aan Riesling doen denken.
Uitstekende combinatie met visgerechten, kreeft en schaaldieren.

The Wine Advocate:
The 2011 Sketch is just wonderful – pure Albarino from vines planted in 1972 on sand and granite soils, it sees 12 months in French oak. Interestingly, Raul opted to age some lots underwater in order to see how the lack of oxygen impacts upon the elevage (although some of the lots were spoiled and of course, did not enter the final blend!) The nose is reticent at first, but over one hour it unfolds to offer subtle notes of lime and a tinge of sea-foam, the oak barely noticeable. The palate is exquisite: beautifully balanced and with real race and tension. There is an adorable twist of bitter lemon that keeps this Sketch on its toes. Taut, pure and effortlessly speaking of its place, this is just a delightful Rias Baixas that you will savor to the last drop. Drink now-2017+.
The wines of Raul Perez have been rightly feted by many commentators and it was just "one of those things" that we were not able to meet up when I visited the region. But I was able to receive the samples, since a report upon Ribeira Sacra without his wines was unthinkable.
